Pronunciation 4: Double Vowels

Some words have two vowels in a row. In these cases, you pronounce each vowel individually. You do this with a small glottal stop in between the letters.

The word "maayo" (good) has two As in a row, so you would say the first "ma" sound, stop it abruptly, and then continue on to "ayo."

In real conversation, you sometimes won't even hear the glottal stop—especially with the word "maayo."

Here are some other double vowel words you will hear:

  • oo - yes
  • diin - where
  • tuod - true
  • saad - promise
  • tagipusoon - heart
  • too - right (direction)
