Pronunciation Tips

Languages are full of exceptions, and they evolve over time. Also, spelling can be variable in Hiligaynon. That means the rules are starting points—not strict laws.

Here are a few of the finer points of pronunciation:

O vs. U - Although O says "oh" and U says "oo," there are many words where the pronunciation is neither. It is instead pronounced like the U in "put."

The word "abot/abut," for example, is not pronounced as "ah-boat" or "ah-boot." This is the case with many similar words, like labot, libot, tubtob, and more. This is one reason why you see the same words spelled two different ways—some with O and some with U—because it isn't really one or the other.

Quiet/Silent H - In the words "duha" and "kuha," the H sound is lessened or entirely removed. They often sound more like "duwa" and "kuwa."
